Blessed is the Kingdom

Seeking The Kingdom In All Things

Saint Monica

In honor of the feast of Saint Monica, I am posting one of my favorite pictures of my mother. My brothers and I discovered this picture several years back when we were beginning our family history project. It seems my mother was a fan of horses in her youth!

This feast day is a good reminder that one can almost always rely on the fact that a mom’s love is unconditional and unearned. I am thankful that my own mother took the time to teach me about God and how to pray. St. Monica prayed for the conversion of her own son, with weeping, for 30 years! It seems she had a very stubborn son but once he came around he turned out well, becoming a saint himself and probably the greatest theologian the West has ever seen. I am happy that she did not give up on him.

Since being ordained a deacon on this day nine years ago, I have felt a kinship with both St. Monica and her son, St. Augustine. In their humanness they give me reason to believe there is hope for all of us that struggle to live out our faith each day. More importantly, they inspire me to get up again every time I fall. Sts. Monica and Augustine, pray for us!
