The Wood Song
God of all consolation,
you chose and sent your Son to heal the world.
Graciously listen to our prayer of faith:
send the power of your Holy Spirit, the Consoler,
into this precious oil, this soothing ointment,
this rich gift, this fruit of the earth.
Bless this oil and sanctify it for our use.
Make this oil a remedy for all who are anointed with it;
heal them in body, in soul and in spirit,br nd deliver them from every affliction.
This past week I have had the opportunity to visit several of the sick and hospitalized of our parish. It is always a privilege to meet those who are suffering under the burden of sickness. They always present Christ to me in a way I would not otherwise see Him. It has been several years since I celebrated the sacrament we call the Anointing of the Sick, and I am happy to be able to do so again. My recent work outside of the priesthood has put me in contact with many who were suffering, but I was unable in my positions to explicitly bring Christ to them. The freedom to do so again is both humbling and gratifying.
As I was considering the content of this post, I thought of these lines from an Indigo Girls song:
But the wood is tired and the wood is old
And we’ll make it fine if the weather holds
But if the weather holds well have missed the point
Thats where I need to go.
When we are weak, God is strong.
