Karma Police
Yesterday my friend David and I got around to taking the hike that was postponed last Friday. We took the advice of Dan H. Allen, who wrote the book Don’t Die On The Mountain. Dan says several times in his book,
THERE IS NO ADEQUATE SUBSTITUTE FOR AN EARLY START!
The approach trail to the AT is 8.8 miles long and mostly up. It was on a hike similar to this in the Great Smoky Mountains when David and I began to hear the mountains singing to us in the form of the Radiohead song, Karma Police.
This is what you get, when you mess with us!
We soon took an additional trail name that we use when hiking together, The Karma Police.
The weather for hiking was excellent as we made out way up to the top of Springer Mountain. Cool breezes in the morning and sun in the afternoon is always perfect weather for a walk in the woods. I was happy to have a second chance to stand at the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. Our first visit to this spot was in the bitter cold of March several years back. On that trip we wrote a short note in the trail register, snapped a quick photo and headed quickly up the trail and away from the biting wind. Yesterday we met three other hikers from Florida at the top, chatted leisurely and then headed down, getting off the trail just as the sun was beginning to set.
It makes me happy that the Karma Police are back on the trail.
