Blessed is the Kingdom

Seeking The Kingdom In All Things

If I Were A Painter

Every once in awhile I find a day that could be considered a milestone in my life. Today is such a day. It was a first for me to pick up an artist’s paintbrush and attempt to create something that resembles art, and in this particular case something that might even transcend art.

This morning we began the process of adding the base layer of paint to our icons. This layer is very dark and gritty, another reminder of the earthly nature that we take part of in this world. Our teacher also mentioned that it represented chaos. As this is my first time painting, it was certainly chaos for me. The idea behind this layer of paint is to push the paint across the surface of the gessoed wood making a dark and even surface that, when done properly, looks almost like stone. My finished product was decisively uneven, but certainly dark and gritty.

This afternoon we began the process of putting the lines of the image back onto the base colors. I was very intimidated by need for detail in this step, especially for the hands and face, but pleased with the end result. While my icon does not look perfect yet, it looks good and I know we still have four days to continue to add layers and highlights to the image that is beginning to take shape.

Stay tuned folks. I am hoping to create something beautiful.
