Seeking The Kingdom In All Things

The Power of Music

One of the gifts of working for Eckerd Youth Alternatives was the power of music that was always present. It had the power to heal, to unify a group, to help express unspoken emotions, to lighten the mood and to bring a richness to our community in ways that other things might not.

My first memories of the music at camp are from my time in Catatogas (the name for our initial training). Our group of new chiefs, which you can see pictured above, had lots of fun singing. From belting out Toby Keith in chuckwagon, to a full fledged version of the theme from the Lion King on our river trip, music brought unity to a new group of friends.

My first group of campers introduced me quickly to music I had never paid much attention to by teaching me some New Soul and Rap. I still recall the first week with them when I learned the lyrics to a Trey Songz song called “I Gotta Go”. It was a very soulful way of making one’s way down a trail. We also enjoyed matching Christmas songs with another nearby group one day while making our way to dinner. GO FROSTY!

The thing I remember most about music while there, however, is the music that always greeted us as we came together for a meal. Many days when it was wet or cold outside, hearing music as we gathered to eat together added an extra bit of warmness to help get us through the often times challenging task of making it peacefully through a meal together. One song that sticks out in my head as being particularly good at creating an atmosphere of calm was “Killing Me Softly”, by the Fugees. It just invites you to relax. Just try listening to it without feeling the stress beginning to fade away.
