Make a little birdhouse in your soul
Sometime during this Thanksgiving holiday I got the fabulous idea for a new post that included a song by They Might Be Giants, a picture of David’s “See Windy City” birdhouse (a much more unique item than the “See Rock City” version—and I do encourage anyone to see both places!), and some more reflections on Advent.
I wrote recently that I hope that Advent will be for me a time of slowing down, of making more time for prayer, of doing less so as to make more time for God’s presence in my life. As I was making my way through the mountains to a Thanksgiving gathering on Thursday, They Might Be Giants came on the radio. Their songs always make me feel good. As I listened to the lyrics, I heard my new mantra for Advent, “Make a little birdhouse in your soul”. It seems appropriate during this season of preparation for the coming once again of God among us that we clear out some space for the Holy Spirit to dwell within us, a birdhouse so to speak. Maybe our Christian birdhouses can also be an advertisement for setting out on a journey together. May it be a journey not to Rock City or the Windy City, but to the Eternal City of God.
