Blessed is the Kingdom

Seeking The Kingdom In All Things

Holy, Holy, Holy

ef94

There has been a standing invitation from my brother priests in Oak Ridge to stop in for a visit when I am in their neck of the woods. Today I was there for a meeting and decided to see if I could find anyone home. Fr. William Oruko (pictured above on the left at the 2004 diocesan youth mass) was just leaving his office when I arrived. He showed me great hospitality in the form of coffee, cookies, and conversation.

As we sat in his living room I noticed a copy of the icon of the Holy Trinity above the fireplace and went to take it down for a closer inspection. We ended up having an excellent conversation about the deep meaning of this particular image of God in three persons. It seemed very appropriate to be welcomed as a guest while in the presence of this particular icon that not only represents the Trinity, but also the hospitality of Abraham. Fr. William was true to form in offering simple wisdom through his conversation and gentle presence. He mentioned the value found in community living and the gift it can be when we allow its joys and challenges into our lives.

My own Advent preparations for welcoming Christ continue to challenge me to find the best ways to greet Christ’s arrival on December 25. Today I was reminded that simply welcoming others as we would welcome Christ might just do the trick more easily than a multitude of my own more complicated plans for celebrating the season.

I was also welcomed by Christ today–through the IHN family staying at my parish! I was sad today, feeling depressed for no good reason…and it was my day to prepare the evening meal. The moms and kids were so grateful for the food and company that they lifted my spirits from “hello”. We talked and laughed and laughed some more…my husband called our kids to come meet them…and by the time the next shift of volunteers arrived, we were a big, smiling, giggling party. What beautiful grace! Truly Jesus in the midst!
