Random

by Fr. Christian Mathis on January 17, 2009

While serving as our Diocesan Youth Ministry Coordinator, I was often accused of being random. It is a valid observation and today I will fully embrace my randomness.

First is an update on the blog itself. The blogroll feature has been changed to include pictures as well as a snippet of text from the blogs I follow. It also now only displays the ten most recently updated blogs. You can still see the list in its entirety by clicking the link labeled, “Show All”. I’m still in the process of trying to decide if this is actually better than what was there before, but the nice thing about blogging is the ability to experiment. Any comments pro or con are welcome.

There are also some new blogs on the list. I continue to find interesting content out there and hope you will find some of what I have discovered as helpful to you as it is to me.

Grace & Truth is an experimental blog being developed by the Adult Faith Formation group at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish where I am currently assigned. It is meant to be an online Scripture study for our parishioners and I suppose for others who happen upon it. Right now, Mark has a wonderful post on some of the basic ways Catholics have traditionally approached the Bible.

Scrumptious… has beautiful pictures, music and reflections. Marfa’s most recent post has also reminded me that I wanted to share a few words about the movie Wall-E.

When We Fast…Or not… is what it sounds like, a blog that includes recipes for times of fasting and feasting. Many of you know of my recent desire to begin including regular fasting days into my life, so this seemed like a good place to find some ideas.

If you haven’t seen Wall-E, I highly recommend picking it up the next time you are at the video store. It is certainly a call to be more environmentally friendly, but I also love that it points out that we are not meant to be alone. What struck me most of all was the way the movie shows how the gift of technology, like any other gift, can be distorted to become a wall rather than something that brings people closer together.

Finally, one more video that was brought to my attention by my friend Lauri. Who knew that chickens were the peacemakers of the animal world?

Have a great Saturday!

I was surprised by how much my kids loved Wall-E, considering that it was way less chaotic than many kids movies these days. I also think it provided an excellent reminder of how having too much of a “good thing” (in this case, technology) can backfire and actually hurt our society more than help us.

I have been meaning to watch Wall-E after I read your post and I finally found the time this morning. BR/BR/This movie has a very powerful meaning behind it. It’s clearly making a statement that we are more than just our physical bodies and that we are made up of pure love.BR/ BR/Where there is love there is life.
