Blessed is the Kingdom

Seeking The Kingdom In All Things

Intercessory Prayer

Each day at St. Thomas I have been reminded of the need for and the power of prayer. Dedicated parishioners offer prayers for one another at our daily liturgy and ask for prayers as well. A large list of of us receive email messages each day that contain requests made by members of our parish for various intentions. The Church has a long history of not only praying directly to God for our needs, but of asking others to pray on our behalf. In that spirit, I would like to introduce a place on this blog where visitors can leave prayer requests that this small online community can raise up together to God. Feel free to add any needs for prayer in the comment section of this post and please join me in lifting up the needs of others to our Lord.

For those who despair that God could ever forgive their sins, let us pray that the Spirit will teach them of the love that Jesus’ aching heart has for them.

May they turn to the Church to recieve God’s forgiveness amp; peace in Reconciliation.

Also for God’s mercy upon the souls of the departed amp; peace on those who mourn for them.

For all the children born with birth defects that God will guide their doctors, their parents, and their parents’ spiritual/social mentors, bless them with happy lives, and melt any hardened hearts around them (as He so often does), and in this, especially for my granddaughter who suffers from having arrived disassembled and for a fetus in our parish known to have trisomy 13 (a powerfully disabling condition) whose parents are making the decision against medical intervention that God be with them and the unborn child that His will be done.

For all those whose hearts are filled with hatred toward people of other religious persuasians (Sunni vs. Shia, Muslim vs. Jew, Christian vs. Muslim, Catholic vs. Protestant) that they may lay down their weapons, be those physical or psychological, and embrace each other as members of God’s large (and highly varied) family, that God may help us remember always that where He is there is love, and in this especially for my friend Maha’s brother who has been being routinely tortured for his religious affiliation in the prisons of Bahrain, awaiting a trial that has not taken place for more than a year.

And for all those who take the time to pray for others that God may bless them and give them the strength, motivation, and time to continue their prayers.

I don’t know know where to put this information, so I will leave it here. Re my request for Maha’s brother (not her real name, but she was afraid to have her real name revealed given the punitive nature of the society in which she lives in Bahrain — and it does not matter, God knows her name), I have news. The prayers of everyone have resulted in a marvelous action: her brother and the others who were jailed with him were declared innocent (without a trial) and the King pardoned them. They all got their jobs back, and they are now considered heroes. Never before has this kind of jailing in Bahrain ended on a positive note. Praise the Lord — and thanks to all who offered prayers!

Please pray for my best friend in the whole world, my mother, who is now in hospice suffering from cancer and neoplastic syndrome which has left her paralyzed virtually from the neck down. During this Christmas season it is hard to mourn her and be excited about the celebration of the birth of Christ. Yet I do both. My feelings are mixed. I miss her company already yet she isn’t gone from this world yet. I read all the other prayer requests and my heart is saddened at aLL the sorrow in this world. May the great God in heaven have mercy on us all and keep us safely in his keeping.

Dear Fr. Mathis, please pray for a reconciliation of a broken friendship between myself and my wife (Brad and Beth) and our former friends, Paul and Mary. There were hurt feelings all around, mostly having to do with my old religion of Catholicism, which is their faith. They opened up a lot of old wounds and brought forth many questions that I never got around to asking. I regret it fully and I wish we could be more grownup, adult friends again. Thank you for your time.
