Blessed is the Kingdom

Seeking The Kingdom In All Things

Praying with St. Gabriel the Archangel

Today I finished writing the icon of Gabriel, well almost. There is still some gold to be burnished and the sealing of the icon in a few months, but the basic shape is there. One thing many people don’t realize is that writing an icon is primarily about prayer and only secondarily about painting. Each time the iconographer sits down to work, he begins with prayer. Here is one of the prayers that can be used.

DSCN0150O Divine Lord of all that exists, You have illumined the Apostle and Evangelist Luke with Your Most Holy Spirit, therby enabling him to represent the Most Holy Mother, the one who held you in her arms and said: the Grace of Him Who has been born of me is spread throughout the world. Enlighten and direct our souls, our hearts, and our spirits. Guide the hands of your unworthy servants, so that we may worthily and perfectly protray Your Icon, that of Your Holy Mother, and of all the saints, for the glory, joy, and adornment of Your Holy Church.

Forgive our sins and the sins of those who will venerate these icons, and who, standing devoutly before them, give homage to those they represent. Protect them from all evil and instruct them with good counsel. This we ask through the prayers of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Apostle Luke, and all the saints, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Beautiful. I ahve had a desire to do three small stained glass pieces of St Michael, St Raphael and St. Gabriel to hang in my living room…I don’t know that I will ever actually achieve this…but I work on it sometimes.
    How wonderful thatprayer comes first!
    God Bless.

I have had a spiritual relationship with Saint Michael probably from the first day I read the Saint Michael chaplet. My spiritual adviser at the time, gave me a copy and prayed it with me. When I read an explaination, that anyone who faithfully prayes it daily invites 9 angels from the 9 choirs of angels to approach the altar when they receive Jesus. That hit me. How wonderful to approach Him with such reverance. So from that day I do not think I have ever missed. (I may have condenced the prayers a few times)
Now that time has passed and the words are etched in my mind, I find myself speaking the first words with my first moment of couciousness. To hear and understand how the angels through their intercession, are here to help me with the many stumbling blocks I might face in my day is a great comfort. Let me share the closing prayers as I pray it. I hope I remember it as you might know it.
Glorious Saint Michael, Chief and commander of the Heavenly Host, Gardian of souls, Vanquisher of rebel spirits , Servant in the house of the Divine king and Our admirable conductor. You who shine with excellence and super human virtue, deliver us from all evil, who turn to you with confidance, and enable us by your gracious protection, to serve God more and more faithfully every day. Pray for us Saint Michael, Prince of the church of Jesus Christ, that we may be made worthy of His promises. Almighty and everliving God, who by a prodigity of goodness and merciful desire for the salvation of all men, has appointed the most glorious archangel Saint Michael, Prince of your church. Make us worthy we ask you, to be delivered from all of our enemies, that none of them may harass us at the hour of our death, and that we may be conducted by him into Your presence. This we ask through the merits of Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen

I Love Those Prayers and wonder how many people have heard them. I hope you don’t mind me sharing.
