Remember the Alamo!

by Fr. Christian Mathis on July 23, 2009

DSCN0164No trip to Texas would be complete without a trip to the Alamo. I personally prefer the Alamo Drafthouse Theatre, but we were also able to stop at the actual Alamo long enough to snap this picture. Our true destination was the San Antonio Zoo. You will probably be surprised to hear that it was a hot day, but there were enough shady spots in the zoo to make it tolerable for a couple of hours. My niece enjoyed seeing a variety of animals before we headed back to the joy that is known as air conditioning.

    Fr. Christian,

It is too bad that you could not have gone to the Alamo 30 years ago — it was not in the middle of San Antonio then, but in a dirt-surrounded area outside the city, giving one a great appreciation of the courage of the defenders the likes of David Bowie and Davy Crockett, who must have known that they would ultimately lose. Now it is more like a museum. Nonetheless, it is indeed a part of American history, and if we can imagine what it was like then — nothing else around, just this very small (I was amazed by how small) fort and Mexicans flooding from over the river…And we complain about the things we have to put up with today! I wonder if we would have had such courage…

Worried about the comment on air conditioning. We’re moving Philip to TAMU next week, and all we’ve heard are horror stories about the temps from Clan O’Hare.

Sounds like you’ve had a lovely month. Ciao, and travel home safe.

Well, It was pretty hot down there….but then again it is July. I wouldn’t let the O’Hare Clan scare you off.
