It has occurred to me on more than one Friday to join Jennifer over at Conversion Diary for one of her 7 Quick takes. The idea is to post seven quick thoughts or stories and then link your post to others who are doing the same. I hope you enjoy my first attempt.

My favorite new band, The Black Lillies, have been playing all around the Knoxville area of late, but I have yet to see them in person. If you like bands of the WDVX variety, check them out. Cruz Contreras, the CC of Robinella and the CC Stringband, is the front man of this group that I hope will find a loyal following among fellow Knoxville residents. Their first album, Whiskey Angel, is part of my heavy rotation at present and not likely to lose its spot any time soon.

Speaking of music of the WDVX type, Old Crow Medicine Show and friends will be back in Knoxville soon and I am happy to have tickets to see them along with our former pastor Fr. David and our friends the Palmers and my friend Anne. Old Crow is always excellent medicine!

Celebrate! Saint Thomas last weekend was a rousing success. Thanks to Jill St. Yves and her adult faith formation committee for another fine job. Thanks also to Faerie Pabich for writing such a wonderful story of the history of St. Thomas the Apostle parish and to everyone from our transition team that worked so hard to make this a true celebration of all we have to be thankful for.

This first week as pastor of St. Thomas has had many ups and downs. It has been true to the words of Fr. Paul Valleroy, who at my ordination leaned in to say, “It is a wild ride!” I look forward to many years with the good people of Loudon County.

Fr. David and I are hoping to make it up to Charlie’s Bunion tomorrow to do a little hiking. Last time I was on this section of the AT was when we hiked 31 miles in one day to raise money for the Diocesan Youth Ministry Office.  Looking forward to being on the trail again. It has been too long.

Still following up from our parish JustFaith group, I have decided to take on the challenge of the 100 mile diet. The idea is the eat locally and with the seasons, rather than eating food that is either brought in from thousands of miles away, or is not really food at all. I remember presidential candidate Gov. Mike Huckabee saying sometimes one could get more nutrition from eating the cardboard box than what is in it at the grocery store. This will be a real challenge for me as I love my coffee! My plan is to work in small ways to move towards eating more locally. I know that trying to do it in one fell swoop will not work. So one step at a time towards eating locally. 100 miles actually gives me quite a bit to work with.

So there you have it. My first attempt at 7 Quick Takes. Be sure to visit Conversion Diary for more Friday Quick Takes!

What exactly is a JustFaith group? Social justice issues are one of the things I like best about being Catholic.

  • Fr. Christian Mathis

JustFaith is a program that invites a small group to learn about the social teachings of the Church and to engage local issues within the context of these teachings. Our group was awesome and I look forward to the next step. We are exploring together what we will do as follow up!

I love this… and the Black Lillies are wonderful!
The first week of being “senior pastor”… keep your hands and feet in the gondola while the rollercoaster is in motion (like, the rest of your life!). God bless your ministry.

Thanks for the introduction to the Black Lillies. I hope there are more ups than downs as the weeks go by. I’m happy that you’ve made time to continue with your blog. I like the idea of eating locally grown food and have been trying to do so as much as possible this summer. As you indicate, small steps toward a goal often leads to success.
