Glory to God for All Things
One of my friends recently mentioned the fact that between the “Sites to See” and “Blogroll” portion of this blog there is quite a bit to explore. At least for him, it is sometimes difficult to know where to begin with checking out the recommended webpages and blogsites. His comment gave me the idea of occasionally posting a highlight of some of the places listed in the margins of this blog.
Today I would like to draw your attention to a blog written by my neighbor in Oak Ridge, Fr. Stephen Freeman. Glory to God for All Things is written from the Orthodox Christian perspective and is an attempt to create a dialogue between culture and religion. Fr. Stephen’s writing always challenges me to attempt to live my faith more deeply and to move a little further outside my comfort zone. He consistently shares the wisdom found in the ancient Church as well as his own reflections upon our common journey of faith as Christians.
One theme you will encounter in Fr. Stephen’s writing is the idea of Christianity in a one-storey universe versus a two-storey universe. His claim is that many Christians today see the sacred and the secular as being separated, with God on the second floor and us on the first. Many people would be more than happy for God to stay upstairs where we can visit on Sunday and then go back downstairs for the rest of the week. Authentic Christianity is incarnational. Jesus came as both God and man without separation and the Church is the same. We are to live our lives in a way that recognizes God’s continual presence. The Eucharist is an excellent example as the focus is not only on things spiritual, but also physical. Thus the idea of the one-storey universe, where God and his people live together.
One of the more memorable posts I have read from Fr. Stephen concerns the wrath of God. A link to it can be found here. I hope that you will find his words as challenging and inspiring as I have found them.
