Blessed is the Kingdom

Seeking The Kingdom In All Things

Roll With the Changes

DSCN0286

One constant in ministry is change. Today was one of the many days I have awakened with my day planned out only to find there were other plans waiting for me. I was successful in getting to all the things scheduled on my calendar, but also was met with the task of receiving a new church sign that was due to be delivered today or tomorrow as well as 100 new chairs for the church. While I knew it was possible for both to be delivered today, it seemed highly unlikely to me that they would actually arrive within an hour of one another. I also had not counted on the wood from our old sign to be infested with termites and thus the need for new materials.

With the help of Don and Mary Hoyle we began our plan of replacing the old church sign with the new in rapid speed so as to be free to receive our new chairs when they arrived. We were happy to receive assistance from our sign maker, Dennis, who loaned us his truck to deliver the wood and another parishioner, Bob, who offered to help with the construction of the new sign. We finished enough of the work to allow Bob to head on down the road and for Mary to meet the folks who were delivering our new chairs while Don continued the work of erecting a beautiful new sign. Thanks also go to Ron and Keith for their help as the day presented its many twists and turns.

Today was a reminder of the importance of flexibility in ministry that can be crucial to success in the life of a parish. My day looked nothing like I anticipated when I awoke this morning, but it was a good day. It was one of those rare days where one can literally see the fruits of many months of labor.

There’s an old joke that says if you want to make God laugh just tell him all of your plans. I’ve experienced this several times.
