Cleaning Windows

DSCN0291

During my college years I often had the following conversation.

“What’s your major?”

“Philosophy”

“Philosophy? What kind of job are you planning to get with that major?”

“I’m thinking about cleaning windows. I’m not scared of heights and the job will allow me lots of time to think.”

Today there were two significant events in my life. The first was being officially installed by the bishop as pastor of St. Thomas Parish. The second was organizing and cleaning my office. A little over a year ago I met the woman who is the perfect organizer and asked her to meet me today to get my office in shape. She did not let me down. We spent a few hours together sorting through many pieces of paper, hanging things on the wall, eating lunch on a newly cleared desk, and cleaning windows.

I am happy to have a clean and organized office. With any luck, it will lead to me being organized in other areas as well. Thanks goes to Marty for the inspiration to get the office in shape!

Cleaning windows is an honorable profession, but I do think philosophy can lead to a host of other options! LOL!

Whenever I hear about philosophy majors I always think of the line in Mel Brooks’ “History of the World”… (unrepeatable here). Thank God you’ve risen about your major and aren’t cleaning windows. :)

I was so happy I could be there! I only wish I had more time.

I’ve been thinking alot about the Bishop’s Homily. It seems most of us get our heads moving in one direction or another and it’s hard to move them in a different direction– appreciated the notion of child-like wonder.

I worked for my Mom, at an apartment complex in Metarie, Louisiana (outside of N.O.) as a yard-boy slash maintenance jockey. One of my co-workers or “mentors” (to use the word VERY liberally) was a Polish Catholic. He is without doubt the most “earthy” person I’ve ever met, and perhaps not paradoxically one of the most faith filled, obersvant and humble. For a young man, he was just what I needed. I learned how to talk to anyone from him, and appreciated his obediance (he never ate meat on Friday). But it was his constant childlike wonder that I found so inspiring and humbling and life altering. And if you were to tell him that he’s the main reason that I’m a Catholic, he’d be probably laugh and be surprised. God bless you Mike where ever you are. And you too Father Christian, most certainly if I could pick a brother, I’d pick you.

I couldn’t have installed you better with a plumber’s wrench! I’m sure you will be quite a fixture around the office!

I about lost it when the bishop said you looked like one of your icons. I’m losing it right now thinking about it :) There’s no much I wouldn’t give to have a photo of your face when the bishop presented you to the congregation.

Congratulations on the clean desk. We’ll see how long that lasts…
