Happiness at NPH
Father William Wasson founded NPH – Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos in 1954. Currently we are caring for over 3,300 children in 9 countries including: Mexico, Honduras, Haiti, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, Peru and Bolivia.
Whenever anyone visits one of our homes, they usually say that they were expecting to find sad children in living in grim conditions. What delightfully surprises people is how happy the children are.
Father Wasson was asked many times, What makes your children so happy? He responded to this question in his book, Who Will Care for the Children. He wrote, I believe it is the balance of four spiritual qualities that should be applied together. They are:
1. Love which fosters security.
2. The act of sharing which teaches generosity.
3. Work which helps promotes the awareness that they should not only receive but also learn to give- back daily.
4. Responsibility which encourages them to be accountable for their own lives.
These might seem like very logical and basic principles. However, as we have been trying to put them into practice daily, it is truly a miracle to see how NPH has continued to transform countless children’s lives not only by helping them to be happy, but also by breaking the chain of poverty.
