Faramir
Among my favorite characters in the Lord of the Rings trilogy is Faramir. Certainly one of the most disappointing things about the films, in my mind, was his portrayal. In the books by J.R.R. Tolkien, he comes across as a much more noble man than Peter Jackson makes him out to be. Here is a quote from his character that points to that same nobility.
War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.
As we approach Holy Week, let us remember that we are engaged in a battle against the destroyer, but let us not forget that we have Christ with us to defend us in the battle for holiness.
