Seeking The Kingdom In All Things

Saint George

Today is the Feast of Saint George. There are many icons of Saint George scattered around my home and office as he is my patron saint, the person I chose at my confirmation to help me on my Christian journey. Last week my friend Steve took me to visit St. Anthony’s Greek Orthodox Monastery outside of Phoenix. It is a beautiful and peaceful setting with many chapels, one of which is dedicated to Saint George. The thing that most struck me in chapel was the iconostasis which, instead of having the usual icon of St. John the Baptist, included the icon of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist which was mirrored by the icon of the Beheading of St. George.

The other thing that struck me throughout the monastery were the unusually high number of icons of soldier saints. There was St. George, St. Demetrius and many others. It seems that the monks who built these chapels wanted to remind themselves and others that the Christian life is a continual spiritual battle which requires the weapons of prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

Saint George, pray for us!
