Separating Light from Darkness
Today we began our day first by adding the lines of the icons with paint which represents giving order to the chaos of the first layer of dark colors. The next step involves what Irene likes to call, “separating the light from the darkness”. The first layer of paint that is used to represent chaos has no light of its own, relying only on the light from the white gesso board below. This stage can remind us of what the cosmos was like before God began creating with the words, “Let there be light!” Genesis tells us darkness covered the waters of a formless void. In the same way, when one writes an icon, the first step in transforming the chaos is to add light to the board. Another image that Irene presented today is the image of a people separated by God to be his chosen ones. First God separated the people of Israel, then later he separated us as Christians, and one might say the saints are separated into an even smaller group of holy people. Each set of people has more of God’s light than the previous set.
Today I came close to finishing this step, but still have to finish Christ’s face and the hands of both He and his mother. It was another long day of prayer and work. I look forward to three more days of the same.
