Blessed is the Kingdom

Seeking The Kingdom In All Things

The Battle Continues

“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle.”

-Philo of Alexandria

The past month has been nothing less than a battle for me on the spiritual front. It hasn’t been that things have been more stressful or busy than normal, in fact things slowed down for the whole month of July for our parish Sabbath month and I spent a week in Austin writing an icon and visiting family. It hasn’t been that new temptations have arisen in my life, it is still the same familiar ones that never seem to cease. It hasn’t been that I have decided to set out on some new lofty spiritual journey, the kind that always seem to begin with the temptation to quit before even beginning. But the last month has been a struggle nonetheless.

This past week can certainly be included in the battle, yet there was something clearly different over the past few days. The fight continued, but it seemed that everywhere I turned, I found signs of God’s presence there in the fight with me. He was there in the words proclaimed each day at mass in the Scripture  readings. He was there in the books I have been reading. He was there in an email or twitter comment. He was there in a friend’s invitation to dinner. The message has been loud and clear, “Don’t give up!”

Today I give thanks for a week when God did not spare me from the fight, but who was there to give me courage to wage it.

Oh, Fr. Christian, somehow I did not pick up from your posts that the last month has been such a struggle for you. I am happy that things are improving. Nonetheless, I will pray for you. I spent a year praying every day for a priest I did not know; our diocese “assigned” various priests to those of us willing to pray for them daily during the Year of the Priest. So, having done that, I can certainly pray every day this coming month for a priest that I feel like I do know, at least just a little, if only through the blogging world. Allah ma’ak, as the Arabs say. (God is with you.)

The spiritual battle is interesting, sometimes I think the battle is always there but its more like we’re in a better vantage point to actually SEE it for what it really is and finally engage it instead of falling to it or covering it over with activities. I guess the same can be said for God’s presence. I love the quote from Philo.
