7 Quick Takes: Home Again
Today seemed like a good Friday to participate in Jennifer’s Quick Takes. These always allow me to take a snapshot of my life and reflect on it briefly.

This past Sunday we were blessed to have Fr. Scott Daniels who works with Priests for Life visit our parish to preach on the dignity of human life. He spoke passionately to our parish of the need for Catholics to stand firm in our defense of life. I pray he will continue to have a successful ministry.

Earlier this week, I made an open invitation to those who read this blog to come for dinner. One reader noted that it was sad that hospitality is so undervalued in our society that many would see the invitation as a plea for help from a lonely person. The thing that I notice in my own life is that when I am lonely, that is usually the time I am least likely to invite people into my life. I am naturally an introvert and there was a time in my life when I saw depression and loneliness as gifts that were sent to feed my artistic spirit. Today I have a much less romantic view about them. The reason for the invite is twofold. First is to provide hospitality and second is that I find so many of my readers to be interesting people. I would love to meet you in person. The invitation has already been accepted by some and I know others are making plans. I look forward to some fun dinner conversation.

I received the syllabus for the St. Stephen’s Course in Orthodox Theology this week. Friends of mine who have taken the course told me that it was challenging. As I have reviewed the materials, I can see they were telling the truth. That being said, I am excited to get started and my large stack of books to be read over the next few months looks enticing. I already have an appreciation for those coordinating the course from this statement in the study guidelines, “Without motivation, a directed reading program is a joyless drudge.” Direct and to the point. I like it.

This week I was the unfortunate recipient of a pretty severe head cold. Having been away for the last couple of weeks I pushed through the week to get the most important tasks done while getting as much rest as I could. Our parish secretary asked me why I have been sick so much. “Must be all the germy people around here,” I replied. Although I know for a fact this particular germ was acquired outside the parish. Glad to be moving in the direction of health again.

October is my favorite month for baseball. This year it has been great to see two teams still in the running who will kill television ratings if they make it to the World Series. I have loved watching the Giants this whole season. I love pitching and to see a team with no superstars on the verge of going to the Series is great. Go Giants!

Inspector Gadget strikes again! I finally broke down and bought a Kindle. It took me some time to be convinced there were enough books available that I would want to read in the format, but now that I have made the plunge I have no regrets. I tend to read about ten books at the same time, so the Kindle makes organizing that type of reading much easier. I hope the good folks at Amazon will continue to add books to their growing library of Kindle books!

This coming Sunday I will be celebrating mass for our diocesan Rachel’s Vineyard retreat. This is a retreat for women who have had an abortion and who are seeking healing. I was honored to be invited and hope that you will pray for all those participating.
