Blessed is the Kingdom

Seeking The Kingdom In All Things

Fr. Barron, St. Thomas More and Benedict XVI

Most of you know that one of my favorite professors at Mundelein Seminary was Fr. Bob Barron. It was he who first introduced me to the movie, A Man For All Seasons. In one of his more recent videos he talks about his own admiration for St. Thomas More (which I share, though I doubt I will ever live with the same faith) and the connection to Pope Benedict XVI’s recent trip to England.

The pope’s recent trip to England and the reaction of the people there struck me once again as how the Holy Spirit chooses to work in our Church. During Pope John Paul II’s tenure as the Bishop of Rome he changed the face of the Church by traveling more than any other pope in the history of the Church. He spanned the globe to be a truly universal pastor. When the former head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith was elected as the next successor to Peter, I was not sure what to think. What would “God’s Rottweiler” be like as the leader of the Roman Catholic Church? It seems that he is most of all a man who refuses to allow the western world to lose its faith. He is a man who believes there are still faithful Christians living in our mostly secularized society who can be the leaven that will transform the world once again.

St. Thomas More once stood as a lone voice for what he believed to be right. May we have the courage to follow his example of courage and faith.

I like the movie, A Man for All Seasons, very much. It was the choice last month of our prayer group, which watches a different inspirational movie each second Monday of the month, combining movie and prayer (other Mondays are prayer only). Thanks for the post. It is always interesting to listen to these posts in which you share the words of Fr. Bob Baron. And should I not get another chance to to do so, let me wish you a merry Christmas.

Yes, Fr. Bob makes appearances frequently here. He taught me quite a bit as a seminarian and continues to teach me now. I pray for his continued efforts at evangelization to be successful.

    Merry Christmas to you too!
