With the season of Lent quickly approaching, I have begun to reflect upon this past year and the many ways in which I have failed to be a good Christian. I am always thankful for the wisdom of the Church in giving us an opportunity each year to start over by repenting of our sins and turning back to the Gospel. During Lent we get to come together as a community as if we were just beginning our journey as Christians and focus on the basics of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. The members of St. Thomas Parish know that I like to begin each Lent by encouraging personal failure in our Lenten disciplines. This year again my hope is that we will fail in our own efforts so that even if it takes the entire season of Lent, we will make room for God to succeed in raising us up to holiness.
