Book Review: The Hole In Our Gospel
This was God’s plan to change the world–He chose His followers to be the change–He chose you, and He chose me. We are the ones who will bring the good news to the poor, bind up the brokenhearted, and stand up for justice in a fallen world. We are the revolution.
We are God’s Plan A….and He doesn’t have a Plan B.
Richard Stearn’s book, The Hole In Our Gospel, has now been added to my list of books that I will return to over and over, each time finding more nourishment for my soul. I just returned from a men’s retreat where we used the book to spark conversation about what God expects of us and how we will be judged according to the way we have treated others.
Stearns begins his book by describing how he was called, almost unwillingly, by God to move from being a corporate CEO, to leading World Vision in their mission to combat global poverty. The premise of his book is that for many Christians there is a glaring hole in our Gospel, in that we have missed much of the heart of Jesus’ message. He argues that being a Christian is more than simply going to church on Sunday, studying the Bible and gathering for fellowship. He argues that God expects much more from us, that He has given us rich blessings that are meant to be shared with the poorest of the poor.
Ultimately, Stearns challenges his readers to pray and act upon the short prayer of Bob Pierce (founder of World Vision) who prayed, Let my heart be broken by the things that break the heart of God.
I highly recommend this book, but be prepared as it will challenge you to a conversion of heart.
This book was provided to me, for free, by Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their BookSneeze review program. I was not paid for a review, nor required to provide a positive review. My opinions are just that, my opinions.
