Tearing the Veil of the Sanctuary
It’s the end of July and that means it is time to visit Texas for 100 degree days and to write an icon. This summer we are working on an image of St. George.
Each time I attend a workshop I am amazed to be able to see new dimensions to the process of creating these holy images. This morning our instructor Irene was speaking to us about the symbolism of the beginning steps of writing an icon, one of which is the attaching of a linen veil to the wooden board. She mentioned that one thing this should remind us of Jesus’ death on the cross. The Gospels tell us that at his death the veil of the Temple was torn in two. The sanctuary veil was there to hide the mysteries of God. With Jesus’ saving death, the veil was torn in two, opening the door to our understanding the mysteries of God.
May we continue to give thanks for the God who has reveled himself to us through his sacrificial love.
