Blessed is the Kingdom

Seeking The Kingdom In All Things

Bright Lights

Much of the process in writing an icon in the egg tempura style involves adding more and more layers of light. At various times throughout this process the icon reaches a point where it looks pretty good: the colors are nice, light seems to be shining from the image on the board, and it is tempting to stop painting and call it good enough. The problem with quitting too soon though, is that there is much more light waiting to be revealed in the image. It takes more work to bring that light to the surface, but there is more light, and the only way to discover it is to keep painting.

The Christian life is similar. Sometimes we reach a point where we feel we are doing pretty well. It is tempting at those points to stop and think we have reached a place that is good enough. But the truth is there is always more light within that has yet to be exposed. The only way to find this God given light is to keep up the work that belongs to all Christians, the work of prayer, the work of self denial, and the work loving our neighbor. If we commit ourselves to this work we will shine even brighter than we can imagine.

Fr. Christian it is beautiful icon. Your post reminds us that we, humanity, are the first icon. Seems that as you add layers to bring out the light of the St. George icon we are to shed layers to reveal the light of God that is already within us.
