Gratitude for Food, Friends & Gillian Welch
Earlier this week I had the opportunity to spend the evening with my good friend Fr. David for dinner and to hear Gillian Welch and David Rawlings as they shared their gift of music and poetry with the people of Knoxville. At some point as we listened to them perform on Wednesday night, I realized that there have been many times that I have thought to myself how great it would be to have been born in an earlier time, a time when I could have seen musicians like The Doors, Loretta Lynn or Johnny Cash in their prime. But then it struck me that I have been blessed to be born in this time when these artists are creating and performing amazing music. Fr. David and I were blessed to hear Gillian and Dave perform at the Bijou Theatre when they were recording their Revelator DVD. We have been blessed to hear them perform as the Dave Rawlings Machine and to meet them afterward to talk about monkeys dressed in baby clothes. We have been blessed to see them perform with another favorite group, the Old Crow Medicine Show. It is no secret that we are both big fans of their music.
As the evening continued, I found myself more and more grateful for the present moment, for the gift that comes with simply enjoying the beauty of both the people and music I love. There was also the pleasure that comes with good memories of times spent listening to the same music with the same people, memories that can’t be taken away. Spending time with friends and doing things that bring joy to our lives is very important. Many times I can get too caught up in my own perceived importance to make that time. Wednesday night I was reminded how necessary it is.
