Blessed is the Kingdom

Seeking The Kingdom In All Things

Absolute Bedlam & Nonsense

One of the things most cherished by bloggers, whether they will admit it or not, are frequent commenters. Those who simply show up, but never comment are often referred to as lurkers. I am not unlike other bloggers who would love lots of reader opinion on every post. I am also a realist who knows that every post will not receive an influx of commentary.  So here is your chance, lurkers and frequent commenters alike. Help me make this post the most commented on in the history of this blog. You can leave a comment on any subject you would like. Serious comments are encouraged as are those more lighthearted. Leave your thoughts on something old, or something new, something borrowed or something blue. But please don’t let me down. Here is your chance to leave the comment you always wanted to. I will do my best to follow suit.

I hadn’t thought about it when I created this post, but today we have our general priest meeting. Bedlam guaranteed!

Fr. Christian, who are your favorite theologians? I’d be interested in a breakdown by period too. Patristic, Medieval, Modern, Postmodern… ;-)

  • http://www.blessedisthekingdom.com Fr. Christian Mathis

Getting ready to leave soon for our priest meeting, but here are the first ones that come to mind. Athanasius, John Chrysostom, Origin, Augustine, Gregory Palamas, Bernard of Clairvaux, John Henry Newman, Paul Tillich, Alexander Schmemann, Hans Urs Van Balthasar, Yves Congar, Abraham Joshua Heschel, Joseph Ratzinger, Cristoph Schonborn & Stanley Hauerwas.

    Who’s on your list?

  • Brad

See if they’ll use this format of “wide-openness”.  If so, please post video.

Someplace between lurkers and frequent commenters…that’s where I am.  Keep on posting, Fr. Chris.  I’m going to email your bishop to tell him how much I value your website.

Hmmm–*tempting* indeed–but…where would I start? Where would I even begin to begin?..

Will have to return after contemplating this this a wee bit….

Deacon Sean forwarded your email to me. Thanks for the compliment.

Here’s something random pointed out to me today by fellow blogger Frank Weathers. Apparently, a bunch of us religious bloggers now have our own youtube pages. Since, I didn’t create the page, I was unaware. Here it is if you want to take a look.

And just to clarify, I don’t mind lurkers. Sometimes people just don’t have anything they would like to say.

VIdeo of most of our priest meetings would be very entertaining.

    “Chrysostom? That’s today!”
Now you know what I say to Joshua when I read your comments in response to his!

I have no idea when the feast of Heschel is, but I think we should celebrate it sometime in the far distant future. Perhaps heaven.

  • http://www.blessedisthekingdom.com Fr. Christian Mathis

It is indeed today. I don’t know when Heschel died, but celebrating his thoughts would be great.

Confession: even though I read many blogs without commenting, I only ever believe that those who have commented have read my posts.

Do you think that that sort of poor reasoning/belief is a perfect example of why the Church does not ordain women?

Also, is this comment protected under the Seal of Confession? Should it be? Would that increase the number of comments you get on any given post?

  • http://www.blessedisthekingdom.com Fr. Christian Mathis

It’s possible that the number of comments would increase here if the Church allowed me to hear your confession via the comment section of this blog. Oh wait, that’s not what you meant. ; )

    Hi Father :-)

  • caribbeanpirates3

Not gonna lie, general priest meeting day is one of my favorites at the Chancery.

  • IC

Hmm.  Well, I have nothing to say.  I hope your general priests’ mtg day was more fun than our faculty mtgs.  I can almost guarantee that’s the case, however.

I like your list of theologians.  ;)

Now–favorite philosophers?  Mine is Gabriel Marcel.

  • IC

I’ve got bad news, Rae.  I just saw this comment so your confession is not sealed.  ;)

  • http://www.blessedisthekingdom.com Fr. Christian Mathis

This is harder question. I also like Marcel. Let’s go from modern to ancient on this one. Bonhoeffer (in some ways also a theologian), that guy Karol Wotyja was pretty cool, Paul Ricoeur, Maurice Blondel, Martin Buber, Sergei Bulgakov, Pavel Florensky, Peter Kropotkin, Etienne Gilson, Martin Heidegger, Soren Kierkegaard, Jacques Maritain, Friedrich Schleiermacher, Anselm of Canterbury,

Ok, maybe I’m more into modern philosophers if the oldest one I can put on the list is Anselm.

I like the Church Fathers. Does that count?

  • IC

    SCHLEIERMACHER???!!!

    I’ll pray for you.
    :)

He almost caused me to drop out of grad school.

  • IC

p.s. liking the Church Fathers is always a good.

  • http://www.blessedisthekingdom.com Fr. Christian Mathis

And I thought you would be alarmed at the number of Russian radicals on the list. Shows what I know.

  • IC

I’m chalking that up to your Eastern Christian sympathies.  :)

  • IC

I can’t help liking Maurice Merleau-Ponty as well.  I want to like Edith Stein. I have a weak spot for phenomenologists.

  • http://www.blessedisthekingdom.com Fr. Christian Mathis

I haven’t read anything by Edith Stein, but her life is compelling.

  • http://www.blessedisthekingdom.com Fr. Christian Mathis

That and my ties to the Catholic Worker.

  • IC

OK, how about this, folks?  Who composes your personal cadre of saints?  Your go-to people when you pray?

Me: Sts Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Francis de Sales, Therese of the Child Jesus, Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, Bl. Elizabeth of Hungary.  And others when so inspired, but they’re the core.

Yeah, I’m kinda Carmelite at heart.

So, just for the record, today is my day off….and I suppose there may be better ways of spending it than surfing the net, but then again I like surfing the net, so maybe that’s good.

My go to saints: St. George, St. Michael, St. Gabriel, St. Mary Magdalene, St. John the Baptist, St. Mary of Egypt, St. Paul, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. Charles Lwanga, St. Monica, St. Augustine, St. Thomas, to name a few.

  • IC

You know, you can always comment back on the NEXT day.  Hope it was a good day off!

  • http://www.blessedisthekingdom.com Fr. Christian Mathis

Thanks for participating in the random nonsense IC! I think with your assistance, this post may win the title of most comments ever, or at least comes close.

  • IC

    I do my best.  ;)
