Are Christians Rejecting the Holy Spirit?

The renowned Puritan preacher, John Owen (1616-83), wrote prolifically on the person and work of the Holy Spirit. In his discourse “On the Holy Spirit” (1674) there occurs a remarkable passage in which he states: “The sin of despising (the person of the Holy Spirit) and rejecting His work now is the same nature with idolatry of old, and with the Jews’ rejection of the person of the Son. In plain terms, John Owen tells us that if the sin of Old Testament times was the rejection of God the Father, and the sin of New Testament times was the rejection of God the Son, then the sin of our times is the rejection of God the Holy Spirit. Great POST.

I don’t know… I’m catching some kind of Modalist vibe in that statement.  Or maybe an over-emphasis of the individuality of the Divine Persons to the detriment of their unity as one God, which is popular today, even among Catholics.  While this quote is certainly food for thought, a series on the paragraphs from the Catechism on the Trinity would be a real feast!

I often say in my grad class that the reason the Catholic Church doesn’t have more vocations is that we are not raised to know the Holy Spirit.  How can you know God’s calling when you don’t know who God is?

Harsh, but I stand by it.

Knowing who God is, and who He isn’t seems pretty important to me.
