Blessed is the Kingdom

Seeking The Kingdom In All Things

What Must We Do to Gain the Happiness of Heaven?

Lay not up to yourselves treasures on earth; where the rust and moth consume and where thieves break through and steal. But lay up to yourselves treasures in heaven; where neither the rust nor moth doth consume, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. (Matthew 6:19-20)

To gain the happiness of heaven we must know, love, and serve God in this world.

God is, if nothing else, intriguing. According to the Baltimore Catechism getting to heaven is intimately connected to what happens while we are in this world. The road that leads to heaven is the one that involves knowing, loving and serving God. So how are we to accomplish this.

Knowing God requires, first and foremost, spending time with Him. Christians have a name for this. We call it prayer. Prayer need not be complicated, it doesn’t even require words. Prayer simply requires spending time with God in order to listen to Him. It means cherishing the words we receive and acting upon them.

Loving God means loving those whom He loves. When we love the poor, the broken, those who are in most need of God’s love and forgiveness, we show Him how serious we are about our love for Him.

Serving God means following his plan for us, that being his hope that each and every one of us will spend eternity with Him in heaven. It means becoming a saint. By becoming a saint, I mean that we are called by God to become the best version of ourselves. It means using the gifts that God has given us to return to Him more than he gave to us.

The map that leads to the treasures of heaven is not hidden. It is not complicated or difficult to understand. It is difficult to follow, however. Let us continue to pray for another as we journey together on the road that leads to the Kingdom.

I recognize that phrase, “the best version of yourself.”  Honestly, though, I have no idea what that means.  I trust that God does, & I just try to keep striving towards him by the means he gives me as best as I am able.  Someone saying, “I am the best version of myself” is a bit like someone saying, “I’m the most humble person I know.”  The second you think you have it, it’s gone.
