From whom do we learn to know, love, and serve God?
We learn to know, love, and serve God from Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who teaches us through the Catholic Church.
I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6)
There were several of us during my time at Mundelein Seminary who were intrigued by the nearby Willow Creek Community Church. Eventually we decided that a visit was in order. A few things from that visit continue to stick out. The first is the fact that the facility seemed more like a shopping mall than a church, right down to the food court. The second is that they opened prayer that evening with the song One Headlight by Jacob Dylan’s band the Wallflowers. The third is the one that has remained with me to this day as a cautionary tale to where we as Christians do not want to go. At some point during the prayer service, a preacher held up his Bible and shared with us that he held in his hand the revelation of God. It was at that point I wanted to stand up and shout that the revelation of God is not a book, it is a person. That person is Jesus Christ. Without Him, the book makes no sense.
It is only through Jesus that we come to know God. Everything in our tradition points to Christ for those of us seeking a relationship with God. We need only to look to the creed to see that most of what we know about God comes from the fact that God became one of us and walked around talking to people for 33 years. This is the mystery we are preparing to celebrate tomorrow. May we continue to grow in our knowledge of Him, our love of Him and our service to Him through our brothers and sisters here on earth.
