Blessed is the Kingdom

Seeking The Kingdom In All Things

Do your work, and then forget it.

Maxim #26 of Fr. Thomas Hopko’s 55 Maxims for Christian Living is one that makes me think. On the one hand, it encourages me to do my part with the gifts I have been given. On the other hand, it reminds me not to take myself too seriously. Remembering both of these things is important for living the Christian life as we  are called to both responsibility and humility. God expects that we will use the gifts he has given us to the best of our ability, and he also expects we will remember that he is the one who provided the gifts to begin with.

What is your work? Whatever it is, do it diligently while not taking yourself too seriously. Be serious about your work, but allow yourself to go home and be equally serious about your responsibilities to your family. Leave tomorrow’s work for tomorrow.
