I Wanna Talk About Me
Never bring attention to yourself.
Maxim #32
As I continue to reflect upon Fr. Thomas Hopko’s 55 Maxims for Christian Living, I find myself running into several in a row which are extremely difficult to put into practice. As a blogger I find myself continually looking for ways to gain a larger number of readers. Most of the time I would like to think that this is in order to share the Gospel with others, but I know that sometimes it is simply about seeking attention. One clear mark of holiness is the ability to focus our attention on others, rather than ourselves. This does not mean that we should be inattentive to our own needs, but rather that we are continually attentive to the fact that there are others around us who many times have needs greater than our own. Saint Francis of Assisi expresses well what Christians should seek when it comes to placing others first in this prayer.
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen
