Armed With Weapons of Self Restraint
Grant, O Lord, that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of Christian service, so that, as we take up battle against spiritual evils, we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
The new collect for Ash Wednesday is one of my favorites of the New Roman Missal. Today we remember that every day we are at war against the spirits of evil in this world. Today we remember that those spirits seek daily to destroy us. Today we remember that we have a God who is merciful. Today we remember that He has given us the weapons needed to defend ourselves. Today we arm ourselves with the weapons of self-restraint, the weapons of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Today let us remember that we are better off serving as a private in the army of the Lord than as a general in the army of darkness.
