Don’t Compare Yourself With Anyone

Maxim #40

During my college days, I was fortunate enough to attend a class at my local parish on the saints. The class was taught by my former high school Latin teacher, Moira Tingle. I only remember two things from the class. The first is that her portrayal of each of the saints was inspiring and made them seem larger than life. The second is that she always ended the class by challenging us not to become the saint whose story had just been told. “God already has a St. Francis,” she would say, “He needs you to become the saint he intends for you to be.”

This serious looking young football player may admire Peyton Manning, and may even end up playing one day in the NFL, but he will never be Peyton. That job has already been taken.

Let us look to the saints as examples of the Christian life for inspiration while becoming saints ourselves. God calls each of us to give a unique witness to holiness in the world. Are you up to the challenge?
